In the Landes, there is a waterfall whose location must never be named, lest you draw the wrath of those who already know where it is. When I moved to the Landes in 2019, I quickly started wondering whether waterfalls could exist in such a flat country. Then, while digging around online, I came across some fairly old photos of a waterfall in this very département. And then came the word: secret. That was all it took for me to spend hours searching for its location, even going as far as scrutinizing topographic maps with the region's slope gradients highlighted.
To find this waterfall, you will need courage and resilience.
The way there is anything but obvious. You have to leave the marked trails, climb over fallen trunks, and push into dense vegetation where landmarks vanish one by one. The ground is soft and slippery, and the terrain has no patience for the impatient. Hidden in the hollow of a small valley, surrounded by moss and ferns, it falls quietly, as if waiting to be earned. A setting at odds with everything you imagine of the Landes, where light filters through the foliage and time seems to stand still.
This photograph was born from that quest. It does not simply show a place; it tells a story of perseverance: the searching, the mistakes, the wait for the right light. I will not reveal its location, out of respect for those who have protected it for so long, and because the joy of discovery belongs to whoever makes the effort to find it.
