Between two landscapes

I was born between two landscapes: the ocean on one side, the mountains on the other, in the plains of the Luy de Béarn, near Pau. Photography came as a way of connecting them. First a camera borrowed from my mother, then years of walks at dawn, and one day the realisation: looking had become my profession.

The path took shape from there. Photography school in Orthez, then, straight out of my studies, a year in Australia, in 2015. It was there that I bought my first professional camera, a Nikon D810, that I began to structure the way I work, and that I photographed my first wedding. Back in France, I set up as an independent photographer: triathlons, marathons, dog shows… Then, from 2017, everything picked up speed, with many weddings every year. Until Covid brought everything to a halt.

I then looked for a salaried position, and luck led me to Euro4x4Parts, a specialist in spare parts for 4x4s and SUVs, where I still work eight years later. Photos, videos, 360° images, then managing a team of photographers that grew and spread across several departments. Tens of thousands of products photographed, reporting, projects on TecDoc, Amazon and PrestaShop. Skills that grew stronger. But also disillusionment, low points, monotony. Periods of inspiration, always too short, and long cold spells. All of it shaped the photographer I am.

The quest

Alongside all this, there has always been something that transcends me. Something that makes me get up at 2 a.m., drive 250 km and walk for an hour in the dark to wait, patiently, for a sunrise over a place I sometimes scouted years before. A sunrise that, some mornings, never comes. This quest has stayed with me since I was 14.

My landscape work belongs to a tradition I fully embrace: that of the pictorialists, for whom a photograph does not document a place but a sensation. I look for mist rather than bright sun, the blue hour rather than noon, solitude rather than crowds. My series are built over years and exist only as numbered fine art prints, which I consider the true completion of an image.

Time passing

I am deeply nostalgic, and melancholic too, which is not quite the same thing. Nostalgia looks back: it longs for a place, a moment, something that once was. Melancholy needs no object: it is a way of inhabiting the present, a slightly grave tenderness that accompanies everything else.

Time passes, and so many times I have caught myself idealising a past. Sometimes even a past I never lived: there is a word for that, anemoia. Perhaps that is where it all comes from. I have always wanted to hold on to these moments, to remember the beautiful things, my journey, my life. And today, yours.

People

I also photograph weddings, pregnancies and portraits. It is not a side job just to pay the bills: it is the same eye, resting on what people hold most precious. The same demands on light, the same discretion, the same conviction that one honest image is worth more than a hundred perfect ones.

I live and work between the Basque Country and the Landes. If my images speak to you, my door — and my inbox — are open.
